D.I.Y. Streets

Roots and Wings are working with national charity Sustrans on the Newcastle branch of DIY Streets, a project that aims “to make streets safer, more attractive and easier to use for everyone”. This involves working in various locales across the city in areas pinpointed by local communities as being the most problematic. A key objective of this project is to bring communities together and take ownership of their streets. We are doing this through a number of events and workshops in schools, cafes, libraries and on the streets, including running trials to find out whether the proposed changes will be effective in practice. We’re also producing concept drawings, designing street furniture and decorations, feedback boards, posters and flyers. We’ve already done lots of work for the DIY Streets project in Jesmond, Heaton, Ouseburn and Fenham but there’s still plenty more to do so we’ll be sure to keep you posted as the project continues into 2015…
