Lynemouth

Youth Participatory Video Project

Roots and Wings was commissioned by Mediabox to undertake a youth participatory film project working with 13 – 19 year olds growing up in Lynemouth, an isolated ex-mining village on the Northumberland coast. Lynemouth is considered economically depressed and socially deprived, with high crime rates and unemployment. Roots and Wings worked alongside the young people to produce a short documentary detailing the reality of growing up against a lack of opportunities and social isolation.

Working from the local library & youth club we introduced the participants to using video cameras so they could shoot their own footage, interviewing each other and capturing the surrounding landscape. They were also introduced to music production software and helped to create the soundtrack for this stark and thought-provoking snapshot of life in their village.
